What you should know before getting adjusted…
Many people think Chiropractors are “back doctors”. It’s a common misconception since we focus our adjustments on your back. It just happens to be where your spine is located. Put it this way, if your spine was on your arm, we’d be called “arm doctors”.
Why the spine ?
When chiropractic was developing as a new science in North America in 1895, patients were not lining up out the door for back pain. Records from the Palmer School of Chiropractic – one of the busiest clinics in North America in the early 1900’s – showed patients being admitted for everything but back pain ! You name it; loss of hearing, blindness, vertigo, heart conditions, depression, digestive issues, dementia, autoimmune diseases and a whole host of neurological cases were being treated….with success !
So, what happened? How did we go from that to low back pain specialists? Some point fingers to the medical profession for attacking Chiropractic. It was common to see Chiropractors being jailed for ‘practicing medicine without a license’ – but this didn’t stop them. As soon as they got out, they returned to healing thousands with their hands. To medicine, this new science was a considerable threat. Presidents and royalty alike were getting adjusted. The American Medical Association( AMA) lashed out, labeling it quackery and attempted to squash this growing threat before it grew any further. It was too late, the momentum was growing by now and the AMA lost its futile battle.
Why did they feel threatened ?
Chiropractic was claiming something unique at the time. It claimed that a life force resides in your body – an intelligence within – so they called it ‘innate intelligence’. You were born with this intelligence and it’s responsible for giving you life, connecting you to higher consciousness and – most importantly – responsible for your healing. You could imagine this caused quite the stir at the time. You don’t need drugs or surgery because your brain and nervous system is tapped into universal intelligence – beyond the conscious mind. It knows how to heal – intuitively. All Chiropractic did was ‘tune’ you into this frequency of healing – of being whole . The same way you would tune the strings of a guitar to a specific key. When the strings are synchronized, the music comes alive.
The adjustment was the “tuning” process, and what we know today with research is exactly how the adjustment alters your neural tone to bring your nervous system back to balance. It’s a complicated dance that involves reflexes between spinal joints, the limbic system of the brain, frontal lobe, postural muscles and organ systems that all come together in a majestic way. What we know now – through science – is what our predecessors were willing to go to jail for. They had faith. Why ? Because they saw results. It was a shift in how we looked at health. No longer controlled by external prescriptions. Health is the product of how you function from the inside-out.
Everyone needs tuning now and then. Some need it more than others. If we find ourselves out of tune – physically, emotionally or spiritually – we are not in a state of ease. Dis-ease begins to set in. The chiropractic adjustment is just that – an adjustment. It adjusts your neural tone. Your frequency. Your nerves will do what it’s designed to do – transmit energy to the body to allow for function and self- healing. It’s our natural state. Chiropractic is the art of tuning the body – and mind – back into its natural state.
Although this core principle has been diluted over the years, Chiropractic has still grown to be the third largest health care profession in the world. We must be doing something right. And its safe. Just compare what a chiropractor pays for malpractice insurance to that of a medical doctor…nearly 10X less. The principles of Chiropractic ring true now more than ever. As humanity re-connects and consciousness re-emerges, there is a collective awakening that is taking hold.
So the next time you go for a chiropractic adjustment – just before the adjustment – take a long deep breath in and reconnect. It’s not about the ‘crack’ or ‘pop’ you hear. It’s not about the pain relief ….or the unlocking of joints. Those are the extra’s that come with an adjustment. It’s about the power inside. When you’re tapped in and tuned in, the music of your life – what makes YOU dance – is turned ON.
To your health,
Dr. John Filo
