The Best Part of a Vacation !
Over that last few years, I’ve come to realize something powerful about vacations – and its the day I come back to work. In that moment of re-entry – back into my old patterns and habits – lies a huge potential of insight.
Let me explain.
The vacation is really a ‘vacating’ from your daily habits and routines. You find yourself doing different things in a different place, new smells, new tastes, new sights etc. It takes a day or so to adapt to this sudden change only to find yourself falling back into a new routine…..eating breakfast later, going to the beach, going to bed late etc. It’s always about routine. The mind doesn’t like instability, it likes routine.
The vacation is a disruption in routine.
Now, the day you return is also like a disruption in routine, but this time your leaving to return back to your old patterns. Nothing new to see, but you see it from a new set of eyes. you’ve broken out of your usual pattern of thought and now are re-emerging back into it. And there is enormous potential in that moment if you allow yourself to see it….it’s a window of opportunity that exists for just a short period of time, before you fall back into your old pattern again. You discover things about your routine and habits that don’t serve you any longer or things you may just take for granted and don’t give any attention to.
I was driving in to the clinic this morning back from a one week family vacation in Florida and felt an overwhelming sense of GRATITUDE. Grateful for a healthy, loving and beautiful family. After spending a full week together, you get a sense of appreciation for what you have and what’s truly important in life.
I’m grateful for the work I do. Being a chiropractor, working with my hands and energy and witnessing others heal and reconnect is a magical thing. More importantly, my work has evolved to become an expression of me. Who you are has to come through in what you do, otherwise its just a job.
I’m realizing that vacations are great for that one reason alone. The disruption in pattern. I say there is tremendous value to be realized when patterns are disrupted. A catalyst for change.
Even if you can’t get away for a week, just taking a day off and doing something out of the ordinary – for the full day – is enough to cause a disruption to the system. Then watch what happens the following day, when you try to reset back into your old patterns of thought. You’ll see things from a new perspective. A new set of eyes. Use those valuable insights to make changes to your routine, or better yet, a new appreciation for what you already have.
Reminds me of the famous quote from Socrates – ” The secret of change is to focus all your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new ”
